In the years since my accident I have tried (or have knowledge about) virtually everything that is available on the European market in terms of all terrain wheelchairs and adaptive mountain bikes. In this process I have gathered a great amount of experience and knowledge with regards to different mobility aids intended for outdoor/terrain use. I have also been involved in the development of a brand new breed of 4WD vehicles. This sprung out of my frustration that I couldn't really find anything that was quite good enough to cater to my personal needs and requirements for such a product.

In the following article I wish to share this knowledge and give some general advice about what to look for when buying such a mobility aid (without talking about specific brands or products). It is important that you do your own research and try different things to figure out what suits you best. There is no one size fits all solution!

Introduction

My name is Sigurd Groven. I am a physical therapist, father of 5 and have always been an avid outdoorsman. My big passion was amateur level competitive mountain biking and physical training in general. In 2015 I was involved in a serious mountain biking accident where I sustained a T1 level complete Spinal Cord Injury. From an early point I started looking for a vehicle that could take me outdoors again, up into the mountains and into the forest. This is deeply connected with my identity and sense of wellbeing and have and always will have a significant importance for my quality of life!

For personer med nedsatt funksjonsevne har elektriske rullestoler utendørs blitt et stadig mer populært alternativ. De siste årene har det kommet mange gode alternativer innen terrenggående kjøretøy. Takket være fremskritt innen teknologi og design,

For individuals with disabilities, embracing the great outdoors and exploring rugged terrains has never been more accessible. Thanks to advancements in technology and design, all-terrain wheelchairs have revolutionized the way people with disabilities experience nature. Whether you're an adventure enthusiast or simply seeking a more comfortable way to navigate diverse landscapes. In recent years there has been an explosive growth in the selection (and quality) of all terrain wheelchairs and adaptive mountain bikes.

These vehicles can have an immense impact on autonomy and the sense of personal freedom for anyone with some sort of reduced gait function. In many cases they will give the user the opportunity to experience inclusion and lead a more “normal” life! “Normal” in the sense that these machines will provide access to outdoor activities on demanding surfaces and in difficult and steep terrain. This can enable the user to join family and friends again to go hiking, fishing, hunting, camping and so on! In this article we will focus on the fully electric / fully motorized versions as a means of personal transport, and not hand bikes that are meant for exercise

Finding the right all-terrain wheelchair/vehicle can make a world of difference and really improve one's quality of life. In this guide, we'll explore the key features to look for and provide insights into selecting the perfect vehicle to match your unique needs. There are many offerings and finding the right product for you is extremely important. Especially since these products involve a substantial investment.

Roughly we can say there are 3 categories of vehicles:

Traditional wheelchairs with 2 or 4 WD with more rugged and voluminous tyres.
These will usually have a short axle width and length, a high center of gravity and will tip over easily. They are usually compact (but heavy) and can therefore work better for everyday life, going into the grocery store and on the bus and so on. They are less functional once the terrain becomes a bit rugged, but are ok for lighter terrain.

Three-wheeled fully electric trikes with or without articulated front/leaning options.
Usually with rear wheel drive. These are more directed towards bikepark use, speed fun and adrenaline. They are quite agile and fast and have fairly good accessibility traits going uphill. The ones with a leaning function can also traverse quite steep terrain, since they can be tipped sideways to compensate for angled terrain. They are also narrower than other offerings which makes them easier to navigate in between narrow spaces. These bikes can be super fun, but do require skills and balance to some extent and might not suit all disabilities.

Four-wheeled quad-bikes
There are different offerings on the market. Some are very powerful and have immense accessibility traits. Others are more directed towards light terrain and have less suspension travel, less battery capacity and weaker motors. If accessing nature and going on mountaintops, in the forest, through sand, mud. A vehicle with extreme accessibility should be your aim. A quad-vehicle is usually the best option in these circumstances. Just make sure that axle width and length are adequate. This is important to make the vehicle remain stable while traversing across angled terrain and over large obstacles. Look for the ones with a high torque number (newton meters). These will have greater traction and be able to pull very heavy loads without overheating. In some cases these vehicles can be used for chores like gardening or to plough snow. Another benefit is that most everyone can use them as they require no skills or balance. Quad Bikes can be found as Gravity oriented downhill-bikes as well, made for bikepark use, speed and fun.

Features and traits to have in mind before deciding should be:

  • Robust Design and Durability

The foundation of an all-terrain wheelchair is its construction. Look for a wheelchair with a sturdy frame made from materials like aluminum or titanium, as these are both lightweight and durable. Reinforced joints and welded components can provide extra strength to withstand the rigors of off-road use. Additionally, check if the wheelchair is designed to resist corrosion, as exposure to different weather conditions and terrains is inevitable.

  • Versatile Wheel System

The wheels are arguably the most critical component of an all-terrain wheelchair. Larger wheels with thick, rugged tires are essential for conquering uneven surfaces, gravel paths, sandy beaches, and even snowy trails. Pneumatic (air-filled) tires provide better shock absorption and grip, ensuring a smoother ride over bumps and obstacles. Look for a wheelchair with quick-release wheels for easier transport and storage.

  • Adjustable Suspension

An effective suspension system can significantly enhance comfort while traversing challenging terrains. Some all-terrain wheelchairs offer adjustable suspension settings that allow you to fine-tune the level of shock absorption based on the type of terrain you're navigating. This feature can make a substantial difference in reducing jarring impacts and promoting a smoother ride.

  • Battery and Power Options

For individuals who need an extra boost, consider an all-terrain wheelchair with power assistance. Electric models can provide additional propulsion, making uphill climbs and extended journeys more manageable. Ensure the wheelchair's battery life aligns with your intended usage, and opt for models with easy-to-replace or interchangeable batteries to avoid being stranded during longer adventures.

  • Comfort and Customization

Just like any other wheelchair, comfort is paramount. Look for a model with ergonomic seating that provides proper lumbar and back support. Additionally, explore customization options such as adjustable footrests, armrests, and seat height to tailor the wheelchair to your individual comfort preferences.

  • Portability and Transport

An all-terrain wheelchair should be designed for both outdoor excursions and practical everyday use. Consider the ease of disassembly and portability for transporting the wheelchair in a vehicle. Foldable and lightweight models can simplify the process of getting your wheelchair to and from different locations.

  • Accessibility and Safety Features

Safety is of utmost importance, especially when venturing into challenging environments. Ensure the wheelchair is equipped with reliable brakes and stabilization features to prevent unintended rolling. Look for models with anti-tip bars or wheels for added stability on steep inclines.

Further clues to find the right all-terrain vehicle

Assess Your Needs: Consider your desired activities, the types of terrains you plan to navigate, and any specific mobility requirements you have.

Research Brands and Models: Look for reputable manufacturers that specialize in all-terrain wheelchairs. Read reviews and seek recommendations from fellow wheelchair users.

Try Before You Buy: Whenever possible, test-drive different models to evaluate their comfort, maneuverability, and suitability for your lifestyle.

Consult with Professionals: Reach out to physical therapists, occupational therapists, or mobility specialists for guidance on selecting the right wheelchair for your specific needs.

Consider Long-Term Maintenance: Evaluate the availability of replacement parts and servicing options to ensure your wheelchair remains in optimal condition.

Conclusion

An all-terrain wheelchair has the power to open up new horizons for individuals with disabilities, enabling them to embrace the beauty of nature without limitations. By prioritizing features such as durability, versatile wheel systems, adjustable suspension, power options, comfort, and safety, you can find the perfect vehicle to match your unique preferences and needs. Remember, the journey to finding the right all-terrain wheelchair is an empowering one, leading to greater independence and the ability to conquer new frontiers.
